Eco-Friendly Moisturizer: Natural Body & Face Creams

Your moisturiser contains petroleum derivatives, parabens, and synthetic fragrances. It calls itself “natural” because no one stopped it. We curated two genuinely better alternatives โ€” one is premium and circular, and the other is a budget cult classic that has been around since 1926. Both are honest about what they are.

What an Eco-Friendly Moisturizer Needs to Do

Skin loses water through a process called transepidermal water loss (TEWL), the passive evaporation of moisture through the outer skin barrier. A moisturizer works through one or more of three mechanisms, and understanding them tells you immediately whether a product is doing its job or performing wellness theatre.

Humectants attract and bind water molecules into the skin, drawing moisture from the air or from deeper skin layers into the stratum corneum. Common examples: glycerin, hyaluronic acid, aloe vera. These are the workhorses of any effective moisturizer. A 2002 study published in Acta Dermato-Venereologica confirmed glycerin as one of the most effective humectants for skin hydration, which appears to be a suitable alternative to synthetic alternatives.

Emollients fill the gaps between skin cells, softening and smoothing the surface. Common examples: plant oils, shea butter, lanolin, beeswax. These are what create the “cushioned” feeling of a rich cream.

Occlusives form a physical barrier on top of the skin surface that slows TEWL. Common examples: beeswax, shea butter, lanolin, cocoa butter. Most plant-based occlusive agents perform comparably to petroleum-derived ones (petroleum jelly being the historic gold standard) according to skin barrier research, while carrying a substantially cleaner environmental profile.

The best conventional moisturizers, including many budget options, do all three. The problem is not that they’re ineffective. It’s the other ingredients: synthetic preservatives like parabens (classified by the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety as having endocrine-disrupting potential at relevant exposure levels), synthetic fragrances (the largest single category of contact allergens in personal care products, per the European Commission’s SCCS), petroleum-derived mineral oils, and PEGs; all of which have no functional benefit to your skin but make the formula cheaper and more stable to produce.

Both products on this page exclude all of the above. They get there by different routes, at different price points, with different trade-offs, which is why both are on the page.

What It Actually Is

UpCircle began with a question: what if every ingredient in a skincare product had already served a purpose somewhere else? Their face moisturizer is built around finely ground argan shell powder, the hard outer shell discarded by the argan oil industry after extraction. These shells are not a lesser form of argan oil; they are a different part of the same seed, rich in antioxidant Vitamin E and higher in certain phenolic antioxidants than the oil itself. Without UpCircle, they would be a waste.

The rest of the formula takes the same approach: ingredients that are either organically grown or derived from plant sources, without the synthetic stabilisers, colourings, or petroleum-derived emollients that most moisturizers rely on.

The glass jar is part of the formula’s circularity, not just its aesthetics. UpCircle used to run a Return & Refill scheme (currently on pause). Keep the jar, send it back, and receive a refilled version for 20% less. They stopped this program for a while, but they are working on getting it back. The jar is infinitely recyclable; the refill reduces the per-use carbon cost further with each cycle.

The Ingredients, Explained

Full INCI: Aqua, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Butter, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Blood Orange) Peel Oil, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Sucrose Stearate, Benzyl Alcohol, Coco Glucoside, Xanthan Gum, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract*, Coconut Alcohol, Citrus Limonum Peel Oil, Tocopherol, Salicylic Acid, Sorbic Acid, Boswellia Carterii (Frankincense) Oil, Salvia Sclarea Oil, Citrus Aurantium Amara Leaf Oil, ^Limonene, ^Linalool, ^Citral.
Organically-grown | ^Natural constituent of essential oils

Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil (Sunflower Oil, organic) is the primary emollient โ€” high in linoleic acid, which supports the skin barrier and is particularly beneficial for acne-prone or sensitive skin. A 2012 clinical trial found that sunflower seed oil maintained skin barrier integrity significantly better than olive oil in head-to-head testing.

Butyrospermum Parkii Butter (Shea Butter, organic) is the primary occlusive โ€” it creates the barrier that slows moisture evaporation. Rich in oleic and stearic fatty acids. Well-tolerated by sensitive skin and non-comedogenic at normal concentrations.

Theobroma Cacao Butter (Cocoa Butter, organic) is a secondary occlusive and emollient that contributes to the formula’s texture and the skin’s softness post-application.

Glycerin is the humectant โ€” it draws moisture into the stratum corneum and holds it there. Present at a meaningful concentration (fifth ingredient after the two butters and the emulsifier).

Argania Spinosa Kernel Extract (Argan Shell Powder) is the upcycled active. Higher antioxidant content than standard argan oil, providing free-radical protection and brightening support. The antioxidant activity is relevant here because UV exposure and environmental pollution generate reactive oxygen species that degrade skin collagen โ€” antioxidant ingredients in leave-on products reduce that burden at the skin surface.

Linum Usitatissimum Oil (Linseed Oil) is high in omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid, which has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in skin. Clinical evidence supports its use in conditions like rosacea, dermatitis, and eczema โ€” making this a formula that does real work on reactive skin, not just “normal” skin.

Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Peel Oil (Blood Orange) is a cold-pressed citrus oil providing the formula’s scent and additional antioxidant activity. As a natural fragrance constituent, it is disclosed individually on the ingredient list โ€” unlike “parfum,” which can represent dozens of undisclosed synthetic compounds.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract (Aloe Vera, organic) provides anti-inflammatory and hydrating support, with evidence for wound healing and UV-induced skin damage buffering.

Tocopherol (Vitamin E) protects both the formula’s stability and the skin from oxidative damage.

Salicylic Acid appears here as a mild exfoliant and preservative, at a low concentration appropriate for daily use on all skin types. It supports gentle cell turnover and keeps pores clear, making this formula particularly suited to combination and oily skin types that often cannot tolerate rich creams.

Boswellia Carterii (Frankincense) Oil has documented anti-inflammatory properties and evidence for improving skin tone and elasticity at topical application.

The Honest Note on Citrus Oils

Blood orange, lemon, and bergamot-adjacent oils contain limonene, linalool, and citral โ€” EU-mandated fragrance allergen disclosures, listed individually at the bottom of the INCI. These are naturally occurring constituents of citrus and botanical oils, not added synthetics. For most people, they are not an issue. For those with known fragrance sensitivities, patch test before applying to the full face. The disclosure is transparent and compliant; most competitor products conceal the same compounds under “parfum.”

How to Use

Apply a small amount to clean, dry skin. Massage in slow circular motions until fully absorbed. A pea-sized amount covers the face and neck for most people; do not apply more than you need. Suitable for morning and evening use. Pairs well with UpCircle’s coffee face serum as a prior step.

UpCircle Face Moisturizer Reviews

I went with this brand because it was plastic-free, but I will stick with it because I really like the product. My face is much softer than it has been in years, with zero exfoliation.” โ€” Verified buyer, EarthHero

My skin was not happy before and I tried loads of different things to sort it out but they didn’t work. But this did!” โ€” Verified buyer, UpCircle Beauty

I’m now 37 and can see those fine lines coming, and many branded creams brought me out in spots. I tried UpCircle and haven’t looked back.” โ€” Verified buyer, UpCircle Beauty

One honest note from reviews: a minority of users with very dry skin find the 55ml jar insufficient for winter hydration on its own, and suggest layering it over a facial oil or serum. UpCircle’s own recommendation is to use their coffee face serum underneath on dryer days, a reasonable suggestion that is practical rather than just cross-selling.

Weleda Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream

A formula unchanged since 1926. Deeply effective for dry and rough skin. The honest trade-offs are explained below.

๐ŸŒฟ NaTrue certified natural cosmetics โ€” independently audited, no synthetic fragrances, no synthetic preservatives, no parabens, no phthalates
๐Ÿ’ช Deeply effective for dry and rough skin โ€” a formula scientifically optimised for intensive moisture retention

๐ŸŒธ Pansy, chamomile, and calendula extracts โ€” well-evidenced botanical anti-inflammatories
๐Ÿ’ถ ~โ‚ฌ10โ€“15 for 75ml โ€” one of the best value natural moisturizers available
๐Ÿงด Multi-purpose โ€” face, hands, elbows, knees, feet, hair ends, dry patches anywhere
โš ๏ธ Not vegan โ€” contains lanolin (wool wax) and beeswax. This is stated clearly in the ingredients and acknowledged here.
โš ๏ธ Packaging in transition โ€” see note below. The 95% recycled aluminium tube is now the official format (as of February 2025), but older plastic stock may still be circulating on the market.

What It Actually Is

Weleda has been making Skin Food since 1926. It was formulated as a multi-purpose intensive cream for rough and dry skin โ€” the kind of skin that resulted from outdoor manual labour, harsh winter conditions, or simply skin that regular lighter moisturizers fail to help.

The formula has not changed because it does not need to. The active botanical ingredients โ€” pansy extract (Viola tricolor), chamomile (Chamomilla recutita), calendula (Calendula officinalis), and rosemary are combined with a rich base of sunflower oil, sweet almond oil, lanolin, and beeswax that forms an effective occlusive barrier on the skin surface, reducing TEWL dramatically on even very dry and compromised skin.

Why It’s Here Despite the Caveats

Weleda Skin Food is not a perfect eco product. It is not vegan. Its packaging has been inconsistent. Weleda trialled recycled plastic tubes, but customers pushed back hard, and the brand returned to its original aluminium format in February 2025. That is the correct packaging decision; it just means Amazon stock may not have caught up yet.

We feature it because the formula itself is genuinely clean by the standards of what is conventionally sold in this category. After all, it is dermatologically effective for dry and rough skin, and because it costs โ‚ฌ10โ€“15 for 75ml, a price point that makes natural moisturising accessible without requiring any compromise on harmful ingredients. There are no parabens, no mineral oil, no synthetic fragrance, no synthetic preservatives. For someone switching from a conventional drugstore moisturizer and not yet ready to spend โ‚ฌ24+ on a glass jar, this is the honest best option at the lower end of the market.

If you are vegan, this product is not for you. The UpCircle moisturizer is. That is a factual statement, not a judgment.

The Ingredients, Explained

Full INCI: Aqua, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Lanolin, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Alcohol, Polyglyceryl-3 Polyricinoleate, Glycerin, Limonene, Viola Tricolor Extract, Hydrolyzed Beeswax, Sorbitan Olivate, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Extract, Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Arginine, Zinc Sulfate, Parfum, Linalool, Geraniol, Citral, Coumarin*
*From natural essential oils

Lanolin (Wool Wax) is rendered from the sebaceous secretions of sheep wool โ€” a by-product of wool production, not a slaughter product. It is one of the most effective naturally occurring emollients and occlusives known, with a composition remarkably similar to human sebum. A 2020 review in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found lanolin effective and well-tolerated in skin barrier repair, with allergy incidence significantly lower than its historical reputation suggested. It is the reason this cream works as well as it does on severely dry skin. It is also the reason this product is not vegan.

Cera Alba (Beeswax) is the primary occlusive that creates the protective film on skin. A 2003 study in Complementary Therapies in Medicine found beeswax outperformed petroleum jelly as an emollient in comparative testing, making it more effective than the synthetic standard while being biodegradable and naturally sourced.

Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil (Sunflower Oil) is the base emollient, same as in the UpCircle formula โ€” linoleic acid-rich, skin barrier-supportive.

Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil (Sweet Almond Oil) is a light, skin-softening emollient rich in Vitamin E and fatty acids.

Viola Tricolor Extract (Pansy) has documented anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, particularly for skin conditions involving redness and irritation.

Chamomilla Recutita (Chamomile) + Calendula Officinalis are two of the most evidence-supported botanical anti-inflammatories in topical skincare, with well-documented efficacy for reducing redness, irritation, and skin sensitivity.

Arginine is an amino acid humectant โ€” naturally present in skin, it supports moisture retention and contributes to the formula’s skin-identical feel.

Parfum (from natural essential oils) โ€” the scent is derived from rosemary and the botanical extracts rather than synthetic fragrance compounds. The individual allergen constituents (linalool, geraniol, citral, coumarin) are disclosed separately as required by EU regulation.

The Packaging Note: Important Before You Buy

Weleda originally packaged Skin Food in an aluminium tube. Several years ago, they trialled recycled plastic tubes. Following significant customer feedback, they announced a return to aluminium in February 2025 โ€” now made from 95% post-consumer recycled aluminium.

However, Amazon listings often carry stock that was produced before this transition. The packaging you receive may be the plastic version, depending on when your order is fulfilled. If plastic-free packaging is important to you, check the listing image and product description carefully, or purchase directly from Weleda or another retailer that confirms the aluminium format. Old plastic stock will eventually clear; the new aluminium tube is the permanent format going forward.

If you receive a plastic tube and this matters to you, Weleda’s old plastic packaging can be recycled through a TerraCycle scheme โ€” details on their website.

Weleda Skin Food Reviews

This stuff is WONDERFUL. I even purchased some for my Mom as she has similar dry skin. I’m really glad that the ingredients are safe and work so well.” โ€” Verified buyer, Amazon

I don’t have dry patches anymore. I have tried everything โ€” hand creams, oils โ€” and the dry patches didn’t go away until I got Skin Food. Since the first time I applied it I noticed the difference.” โ€” Verified buyer, Amazon

After 13 years of Scottish winters, Skin Food is still my go-to. It sinks right in, my skin inhales it.” โ€” Independent reviewer, Moral Fibres

For dry and normal skin types, this is a really great option that doesn’t break the bank. It’s not for the faint-hearted โ€” it’s a thick cream โ€” but it delivers.” โ€” Verified buyer

One honest note from reviews: Skin Food is not a lightweight daily moisturizer for oily or combination skin in warm climates. It is designed for dry, rough, and compromised skin and performs best in those conditions. If your skin is combination or you find rich creams too heavy, the UpCircle formula, lighter in texture with added salicylic acid, is the better choice.

Choose UpCircle if: you want a fully vegan, all skin type formula in circular packaging with award-winning sustainability credentials.

Choose Weleda if: you have dry to very dry skin, want the most effective budget option in this category, and are comfortable with beeswax and lanolin, or are buying for someone who isn’t concerned with vegan status.

Use both if: you want the UpCircle formula daily for normal maintenance, and Weleda for intensive treatment on specific areas like elbows, heels, and dry patches.

Our Verdict

The conventional moisturizer category is dominated by products that work adequately while containing ingredients that range from mildly questionable (synthetic preservatives, undisclosed fragrance compounds) to actively problematic (mineral oil derivatives, PEG-based emollients). The industry’s response to scrutiny has generally been to relabel these ingredients more obscurely, not to remove them.

UpCircle and Weleda both took the other route starting with the question of what a moisturizer actually needs to do and building backwards from there. The results are different products for different contexts, but both genuinely earn their ingredient claims without the greenwashing that plagues this category.

UpCircle is the more complete product: circular packaging, upcycled active ingredients, vegan, and award-winning for sustainability. If budget were no constraint and skin type no consideration, it would be the obvious recommendation for everyone. The Weleda is here because not everyone is in that position, and because a formula that has worked without modification since 1926, at a price point accessible to most households, with clean botanical ingredients and no synthetic nasties, deserves to be on this page alongside the premium option.

The honest trade-offs are above. They belong there, not in the fine print.
