Eco-Friendly Sunscreen: Reef-Safe and Non-Toxic Sun Care

Congratulations on choosing not to destroy ocean ecosystems on your next beach day. Traditional sunscreens kill coral reefs and are dangerous for your skin. These two don’t. Plastic-free, mineral-only, no chemical UV filters.

The Science You Should Know Before Buying Any Sunscreen

Chemical vs Mineral UV Filters

Conventional sunscreens work by absorbing UV radiation through organic chemical compounds, such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, homosalate, and others. These are not passive blockers. They penetrate the skin, enter the bloodstream, and persist.

A 2019 clinical study published in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) found that four common chemical sunscreen ingredients, avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule, were absorbed into the bloodstream after a single application and detected at levels exceeding the FDA’s safety evaluation threshold. After four days of use, oxybenzone was found at concentrations 188 times the threshold considered safe without additional study. These were not edge cases. They were standard application conditions.

A 2020 follow-up trial by the same FDA research team, also published in JAMA, confirmed the same systemic absorption across six chemical filters in all four sunscreen formats tested.

In 2020, the US FDA released a proposed rule stating that only two sunscreen ingredients could be classified as “Generally Recognised as Safe and Effective” (GRASE): zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The remaining 12 common chemical filters, including oxybenzone, were moved to “insufficient data” status, meaning the existing evidence is not sufficient to confirm safety, not that they have been proven harmful. The distinction matters. It also means “chemical sunscreen is safe” is not a fact, and “mineral sunscreen is a paranoid alternative” is not a fair characterisation.

Reef Damage Is Measurable and Real

Certain chemical sunscreen compounds, particularly oxybenzone and octinoxate, have been shown to damage coral reefs at concentrations as low as 62 parts per trillion. Both Hawaii and the US Virgin Islands have banned their sale. Several Mediterranean countries are implementing restrictions in marine protected areas.

Non-nano zinc oxide, by contrast, does not dissolve in the water column and does not penetrate coral tissue. The particle size keeps it on the surface rather than in solution. The EU Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety has confirmed that current research shows zinc oxide nanoparticles do not penetrate intact skin, remaining on the surface or in the outermost layer of dead skin (stratum corneum). However, they advise against their use in sprayable or powder products due to potential inhalation risks.

What Non-Nano Means and Why It Matters

Nanoparticles are particles smaller than 100 nanometres. In sunscreens, nano-sized zinc oxide provides a less visible white cast because the particles are small enough to scatter visible light less dramatically. The environmental concern: nano-sized particles are small enough to penetrate biological membranes and enter marine organisms’ cells. Non-nano zinc oxide particles are large enough that this does not occur. Both products on this page use exclusively non-nano zinc oxide. Neither uses titanium dioxide, chemical UV filters, or nanoparticles.

The Waterless Formula Advantage

Both Sol de Ibiza and Suntribe make waterless sunscreens. This is not simply a packaging decision. Water in a cosmetic formula requires preservatives to prevent microbial growth, and those preservatives (parabens, phenoxyethanol, methylisothiazolinone) come with their own safety and environmental profiles. A waterless formula needs no preservatives, meaning a genuinely cleaner ingredient list. It also means the formula is a higher concentration of active and beneficial ingredients per gram.

Brand 1: Sol de Ibiza

Alessandro moves to Ibiza in 2015, swims open water every day, finishes a long swim and can smell the chemical sunscreen floating in the water around him. He spends three years developing a response.

Meet Sol de Ibiza

Alessandro Mancini co-founded Sol de Ibiza in 2015 after three years of research driven by a simple frustration: every sunscreen on the market was either chemically aggressive, packaged in plastic that ended up in the sea he swam in, or both. He sourced aloe vera locally from Ibiza’s organic centre, Casita Verde, found a lab willing to build a formula around natural ingredients only, and insisted on tinplate packaging from the beginning. The result is sold in over 1,200 retailers across 19 European countries. Since day one, Sol de Ibiza has pledged 1% of all sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment through the 1% for the Planet alliance.

What’s In It

Full INCI: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Zinc Oxide (20%), Cocos Nucifera Oil, Silica, Euphorbia Cerifera Cera, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Oryzanol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Polyglyceryl-3 Polyricinoleate, Isostearic Acid, Lecithin, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Citric Acid.

Zinc Oxide (20%) is the only UV filter. Non-nano. Broad-spectrum: blocks both UVA and UVB rays by sitting on the skin’s surface and reflecting/scattering radiation. Does not penetrate the skin. The FDA classifies it as GRASE โ€” the strongest safety designation currently given to any sunscreen filter. The 20% concentration in Sol de Ibiza is on the higher end for commercial mineral sunscreens, providing meaningful protection depth.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is a light, skin-conditioning ester derived from coconut oil. It is the base that carries the zinc oxide particles and gives the formula its smooth application texture. Its comedogenic risk, meaning the likelihood of clogging pores and causing blackheads or whiteheads, is low.

Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut Oil) provides moisturisation, anti-inflammatory properties, and antibacterial surface protection.

Euphorbia Cerifera Cera (Candelilla Wax) is the binding wax โ€” a vegan plant-derived wax from a desert shrub. This is what makes Sol de Ibiza fully vegan. It contributes to the formula’s water resistance.

Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil (Sunflower Oil) โ€” antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial. Also rich in linoleic acid, which supports the skin barrier.

Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil (Sweet Almond Oil) โ€” deeply moisturising, particularly suited to dry or sensitive skin.

Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) โ€” locally sourced from Ibiza. The ultimate skin hydrator. Soothes, reduces redness, and accelerates healing of minor sun-exposed irritation.

Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract โ€” anti-inflammatory and soothing. Particularly valuable as a sunscreen additive because sun exposure triggers inflammation; calendula helps buffer that response.

Oryzanol (Rice Bran Extract) โ€” a natural antioxidant and mild UV-absorbing compound that works synergistically with the zinc oxide filter.

Tocopherol (Vitamin E) + Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C ester) โ€” two antioxidants that protect both the formula’s stability and the skin from free radical damage triggered by UV exposure.

How to Apply It

This is a waterless solid formula. It is denser than a conventional sunscreen lotion and requires the right technique to avoid patchy application.

  1. Take a small amount from the tin with your fingertip โ€” roughly a pea-sized amount for the face, more for the body.
  2. Warm it between your palms first. This is not optional. The formula is solid at room temperature and becomes creamy on contact with body heat. Applying it cold and dry will produce white patches and frustration.
  3. Once creamy, apply to face or body using circular motions.
  4. Reapply every 40 minutes after swimming or intense sweating.

White cast: Sol de Ibiza claims no white cast, and under normal conditions with the warming technique, this is largely accurate for medium skin tones. Very deep skin tones may still notice a slight chalky finish, which is a limitation of any zinc oxide formula, regardless of marketing language. Blending well and starting from the palms resolves most of it.

Winter tip: if the tin is cold from storage or a bag, the formula will be very firm. A few seconds of palm warming resolve this completely.

What Real Customers Say

Great product overall. Leaves the skin feeling nourished. Need to really warm up in hands first or you will just push it across the face and not blend it in.” โ€” Verified buyer, Amazon

Feels great on skin, really moisturising. Does exactly what I hoped for โ€” no weird ingredients, smells natural, stayed on well at the beach.” โ€” Verified buyer

Great sunscreen for your face, a nice thick layer; I have dry skin myself so it feels good, provides real protection.” (TRANSLATED FROM DUTCH) โ€” Verified buyer, Amazon.nl

Meet the Suntribe

Suntribe’s range is built across three use-case tiers โ€” everyday all-around, high-performance sports, and daily facial skincare with all products using non-nano zinc oxide as the sole UV filter and most using three to seven ingredients total. The differences between products come down to SPF level, water resistance, white cast, vegan status, texture, and format.

Below, the full range is categorised by use case so you can find what fits your situation without reading every label.

Suntribe’s Eco-Friendly Sunscreen Range

Organic Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 (Original Formula For Everyday Use)

Suntribe’s first and most popular product. An oil-based lotion with a warm coconut-cocoa character, the cocoa butter and cocoa powder in the formula give it a lightly tinted, chocolatey texture and a gentle scent that feels more like a body product than a clinical cream.

Inactive ingredients: organic sunflower oil, organic coconut oil, organic cocoa butter, organic cocoa powder, organic beeswax, organic shea butter, vitamin E.

Water resistance: 40 minutes.

Honest note on vegan status: this formula contains organic beeswax. It is not vegan. If vegan certification matters to you, see the SPF 50 or Baby & Kids versions below.

Active Organic Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 (vegan, allergen-free, beach/holiday choice)

The SPF 50 is a meaningfully different product โ€” not just a number bump. It is vegan, fragrance-free, allergen-free, and suitable for babies from 6 months. It uses an innovative combination of non-nano zinc oxide and Pongamia Glabra Seed Oil (a plant-derived oil with documented UV-filtering and white cast-reducing properties) to provide genuinely better skin tone coverage than most mineral SPF 50 formulas.

Suntribe is direct about the SPF 30 vs 50 science: SPF 30 blocks approximately 97% of UVB rays; SPF 50 blocks approximately 98%. The one percentage point difference is real but marginal for most daily use situations. The reason to choose SPF 50 is prolonged beach or mountain exposure, lighter skin types that burn quickly, or the desire for a vegan formula โ€” not because SPF 50 provides dramatically more protection.

Water resistance: 80 minutes โ€” double the SPF 30. This is the meaningful practical difference for swimming or sweating.

Face & Sport Zinc Sun Stick For Sports and High-Exposure Use

Suntribe’s most distinctive product and the most minimal sunscreen we’ve ever seen on a shop shelf. Base formula: organic coconut oil, organic beeswax, non-nano zinc oxide. Three ingredients. That is the whole list.

It is packaged in a biodegradable cardboard stick, the same format as a solid lip balm or deodorant. It applies as a thick, visible layer intended for high-intensity sports use: surfing, skiing, cycling, beach volleyball. The coloured variants add one ingredient each: cocoa powder (Cocoa Tint), ultramarine mineral (Ocean Blue), or iron oxide (Pretty Pink).

Five colours are available, which is genuinely unusual in this category and makes the product visually distinct in ways that have turned it into something of a brand icon.

Beeswax note: not vegan due to beeswax. The tin version (below) uses the same formula.

Storage note: the cardboard stick can soften above 20ยฐC. In warmer climates, the tin format is more practical.

Face & Sport Zinc Tin (same formula, metal tin, full-size and mini)

The tin contains the same three-to-four ingredient formula as the zinc stick, packaged in a 56% recycled steel tin that is leak-proof and climate-stable. Available in full size (45g) and mini (15g), the mini is the most travel-practical eco-friendly sunscreen on this page.

The tin format is recommended for temperatures above 20ยฐC, travel, and anyone who finds applying a stick to larger areas of the face less convenient than using fingers.

Choose Sol de Ibiza if: you want a vegan, fully plastic-free tin format, locally sourced botanicals, and a brand with a direct ocean conservation commitment. Also the stronger choice for sensitive or dry skin because the formula is richer in skin-feeding oils.

Choose Suntribe SPF 30 if: you prefer a tube-dispensed lotion format, love the cocoa-coconut scent, and your household doesn’t require a vegan formula.

Choose Suntribe Active SPF 50 if: you want a vegan formula with 80-minute water resistance for beach holidays, sports, or young children. The best option for prolonged outdoor exposure.

Choose a Suntribe Sports product if: you surf, ski, cycle, or do any outdoor sport where sunscreen needs to stay put under sweat and water and not require constant reapplication.

Our Verdict

The conventional sunscreen industry has a chemical dependency problem, both in terms of the synthetic UV filters that end up in bloodstreams and waterways, and in terms of the plastic bottles that carry them. The FDA has effectively said it cannot confirm that most chemical UV filters are safe at current exposure levels. The reef damage from oxybenzone is documented and legally acted on in multiple jurisdictions.

Mineral sunscreen is not a trend. It is the scientifically better-supported choice for skin safety and ocean safety. The trade-off is slightly more application effort and occasional white cast, which is real but manageable. Both Sol de Ibiza and Suntribe address the white cast issue directly in their formulas: Sol de Ibiza through the warming-in-palms technique, Suntribe through the Pongamia oil in the SPF 50 formula.

Sol de Ibiza is our top pick because it combines the cleanest possible formula (17 ingredients, all organic or of natural origin) with the most commendable packaging (plastic-free tin, reusable and recyclable) and a direct contribution to ocean preservation with every purchase. For anyone who needs a more specialised product, Suntribe’s range covers every remaining base without plastic or chemical filters: sports performance, lip protection, daily facial SPF, or baby-specific.

Between the two brands, there is no version of summer where at least one of these is not the right choice.
