Eco-Friendly Water Bottles Made of Stainless Steel: Reusable & Plastic-Free

An average litre of bottled water contains 240,000 plastic particles. Most of them come from the plastic bottle. Bambaw stainless steel water bottles — two versions, zero plastic, designed to last a lifetime. Stop drinking microplastics and make the switch to eco-friendly water bottles.

What Bottled Water Is Actually Doing to You

This is not scaremongering. These are peer-reviewed findings.

A 2024 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that a single litre of bottled water contains an average of 240,000 microplastic and nanoplastic particles — 10 to 100 times more than earlier estimates had found, because previous methods couldn’t detect particles at the nanoplastic scale. Nanoplastics made up 90% of the total.

The particles come from the bottle itself. Each time you twist the cap, approximately 500 microplastic particles are shed into the water, according to a study in the Journal of Water and Health, a finding from the Environmental Working Group. The manufacturing process, heat, pressure, and transportation also cause the bottle to shed particles before you’ve opened it. A 2018 study of 259 bottles across 11 brands found microplastics in 93% of them.

At least 150 chemicals are known to leach from PET plastic beverage bottles into the liquid inside, including heavy metals such as antimony and lead, and endocrine-disrupting compounds, including BPA and phthalates. PET (polyethylene terephthalate), the standard material in single-use water bottles, is classified as a potential endocrine disruptor.

The health consequences are beginning to emerge in population-level data. A 2024 cross-sectional study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found statistically significant associations between regular bottled water consumption and increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, gastric ulcers, and kidney stones — after adjusting for age, education, gender, and economic variables. The study’s authors are explicit that the mechanism is consistent with BPA and microplastic exposure from PET packaging.

Bottled water is also not superior to tap water on safety grounds. Research shows bottled water contains approximately 60 times more microplastics than tap water. Most municipal water in the Netherlands meets or exceeds WHO drinking water quality standards. You are paying for packaging, not for better water.

Around 1 million plastic water bottles are sold every minute globally, the majority single-use. The environmental cost of producing, transporting, and disposing of this volume of plastic is substantial and ongoing. Stainless steel, by contrast, is infinitely recyclable, does not leach chemicals, does not shed microplastics, and does not degrade in quality with repeated use.

The case for switching to eco-friendly water bottles is both personal and environmental. They happen to be the same bottle.

The Two Bottles: Which One Is For You

Both bottles are made from 18/8 food-grade stainless steel, the same interior grade used in professional kitchen equipment, with no plastic interior liner. Both are BPA-free, lead-free, and certified to EU Regulation 1935/2004, the French decree 2008/1469, and the French Methodology Document DGCCRF DM/4B/COM/001 following third-party lab testing. Both have a wide mouth opening sized to fit ice cubes, a tea infuser, and a bottle brush.

They are different in three meaningful ways: insulation, weight, and dishwasher compatibility.

The Insulated Double-Wall Bottle

Hot 12 hours. Cold 24 hours. Wide mouth. BPA-free, lead-free.

Available in: Navy Blue, Black, Grey, Green, Ice Blue, Red, Steel, Lavender, White, Yellow
Sizes: 350ml | 500ml | 750ml (1000ml currenly not available in the insulated version)

The insulated version uses vacuum double-wall construction — two stainless steel walls with a vacuum between them, which eliminates heat transfer almost entirely. The result: hot drinks stay hot for 12 hours, cold drinks stay cold for 24. This is the right bottle for coffee, tea, ice water, cold-brew, or any drink where temperature retention over several hours matters.

The exterior has a powder coating that provides grip, colour, and scratch resistance. The powder coat is BPS-free and phthalate-free. The bamboo lid adds a lightweight natural material as the cap contact surface.

Do not put the insulated bottle in the dishwasher. The high heat and detergent of a dishwasher cycle degrade the vacuum seal between the walls over time, reducing insulation performance. Hand-wash only, with warm water and mild soap, or with the bottle brush set listed above. The wide mouth makes this straightforward.

Sizes available: 350ml, 500ml, 750ml. The 1000ml version does not exist in the insulated format. If you need a full litre, the single-wall bottle is the option.

Use this bottle for: coffee and tea on the commute, keeping water cold at the gym or on a hike, desk use at the office, any context where temperature retention over several hours improves your day.

The Single-Wall Stainless Steel Bottle

Lightweight. Dishwasher safe. Boil-safe. Camp-proof.

Available in: Navy Blue, Black, Grey, Green, Ice Blue, Red, Steel, Lavender, White, Yellow
Sizes: 500ml | 750ml | 1000ml

The single-wall version is lighter, simpler, and more thermally neutral. Your drink stays roughly at the temperature you put it in. What it adds over the insulated version: it is dishwasher safe, camp-boiling proof (you can boil water in it over a flame, which the insulated version’s construction does not permit), lighter in the hand, and available in a 1000ml size.

The exterior has no paint or coating. The natural brushed steel finish is scratch-resistant by default, with nothing to chip, peel, or wear. This also makes it the easiest bottle to recycle at the true end of life: single-material stainless steel with no coating layers.

Dishwasher safe: yes. Place it opening down on the top rack. Remove the lid and wash it separately by hand. The lid seal performs better when not subjected to repeated dishwasher heat cycles.

Sizes available: 500ml, 750ml, 1000ml. If you drink a litre of water through a morning of meetings or a long hike, this is the only format in the Bambaw range that covers it in one fill.

Use this bottle for: outdoor adventures, hiking, camping, travel (where dishwasher access makes easy cleaning important), everyday use if temperature retention is not a priority, and any context where a lighter bottle or a larger capacity matters.

The Bottle Brush Set

The Bottle Brush Set

A set of four brushes in different diameters, all with a soft cotton tip designed to clean without scratching the stainless steel interior. The wide-mouth opening on both Bambaw bottles means cleaning is not difficult, but a brush set makes it thorough and fast, particularly for the lid threads and the base of the bottle where residue collects.

The soft cotton tip matters specifically for stainless steel: abrasive scrubbers create micro-scratches in the interior surface where bacteria can accumulate. Cotton cleans without damaging the surface.

Essential if you use the insulated bottle, since it cannot go in the dishwasher, the brush set is the most effective way to clean it properly between uses.

Why Bambaw

Bambaw was founded in 2017 in Brussels by twin brothers Max and Augustin, with a single stated mission: reduce the amount of waste on earth by developing plastic-free products and spreading awareness about sustainable living. They are not a lifestyle brand that pivoted to sustainability. They started there and have operated there exclusively since day one.

The company, supply chain, and transport are carbon neutral, as certified by the CO2 Logic label. That certification requires calculating the full footprint across the supply chain, reducing emissions where possible, and offsetting the remainder through verified projects, currently including a project in Malawi replacing biomass-burning cookers with energy-efficient ceramic alternatives, reducing deforestation and CO2 emissions while directly improving livelihoods.

Bambaw’s supply chain is based in Asia, which they acknowledge that raw materials are sourced and produced in Asia, and shipped to their Brussels headquarters. Transparency about supply chain length is more honest than brands that obscure it. They work closely with partners, including a family-run bamboo business in Indonesia, supporting them with tools and equipment when banks withdrew support, and ensuring fair payment throughout.

Every product ships in plastic-free packaging. Their full range of razors, shaving brushes, oral care, bottle brushes, and water bottles is designed around one principle: products are sustainably designed, ethically developed, and built to replace single-use items rather than become single-use items themselves.

To support the broader plastic pollution conversation beyond their own products, Bambaw partners with the Plastic Soup Foundation and 5 Gyres, two organisations conducting research and spreading awareness on plastic pollution globally. They are not simply offsetting their own footprint; they are actively funding the research that documents why switching matters.

Bambaw products already appear on several other Green Goods Gallery pages — shaving, shampoo, lunch box, cutlery — because they come up consistently as the best-available option when we look at this specific combination: a product designed to last, independently tested, plastic-free from packaging to product, and made by a brand whose sustainability position isn’t a recent marketing decision.

How to Care for Bambaw’s Eco-Friendly Water Bottles

Both versions:

  • Rinse after every use
  • For deeper cleaning: add a small amount of baking soda and warm water, shake, let sit 15 minutes, brush and rinse
  • Clean the lid regularly — thread areas and seals accumulate residue faster than the bottle body
  • Air dry with the lid off — trapped moisture encourages bacterial growth

Insulated only:

  • Hand wash with warm water and mild soap — no dishwasher
  • Do not use in the microwave
  • Do not freeze

Single-wall only:

  • Dishwasher safe (top rack, lid hand-washed separately)
  • Can be used over a camping stove or fire for boiling water
  • Do not microwave

Our Verdict

The case for a stainless steel reusable bottle is now more robustly evidenced than it has ever been. A litre of bottled water averages 240,000 microplastic particles. Each cap-twist releases 500 more. The health associations with chronic bottled-water consumption are documented in peer-reviewed population studies. And none of this touches the environmental cost of producing and discarding 1 million plastic bottles per minute globally.

Bambaw’s eco-friendly water bottles are independently tested, third-party certified, and made from food-grade stainless steel that does not degrade, leach, or produce microplastics under normal use. They are sold by the manufacturer directly through Amazon.

Buy the insulated version if temperature retention matters to you, coffee in the morning, cold water through an afternoon, anything where what you’re drinking should still be the right temperature hours later.

Buy the single-wall version if you want the lightest, simplest bottle possible, need 1000ml capacity, want dishwasher cleaning, or plan to use it outdoors in conditions where boiling water over a flame is a possibility.

Add the brush set if you buy the insulated version — or either version — and prefer thorough cleaning over a quick rinse.
